Air Carrier Operational Safety in the 21st Century
Nicholas A. Motlagh is an international Captain flying the Boeing 757-200, 757-300, and 767-300ER series aircraft with Delta Air Lines based at JFK International Airport, New York. Having over 24 years of combined military and civil aviation leadership, he has amassed over 10,400 mishap free flight hours spanning over 40 different types of aircraft to include an extensive background in military high performance ejection seat equipped trainers, military tanker, airlift and reconnaissance aircraft, transport category airliners, and a wide variety of general aviation aircraft.
During his distinguished career in the active duty U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard, Nicholas served as a U.S. Air Force Command Pilot, and as a highly qualified instructor pilot in both the Boeing KC-135R/T Stratotanker and Beechcraft T-6A Texan II aircraft. He possesses an extensive background as a mobility aircraft Tactics Officer and electronic combat subject matter expert. Nicholas also served as a Flight Safety Officer and accident investigator, Crew Resource Management/Threat and Error Management instructor, and airshow qualified performer/demonstration pilot. Having served as a squadron deputy commander, Nicholas commanded and flew over 260 combat missions in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve.
Nicholas holds a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics and a Master of Science in Aeronautical Science specializing in Aerospace Safety Systems and Human Factors with Distinction from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He also holds current Gold Seal Certified Flight Instructor, Certified Instrument Instructor, and Certified Multi-Engine Instructor certificates.
